Desserts with kids: Homemade Ice Cream

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

All kids love ice cream, right?  Well why not let them burn a few calories while making their own homemade ice cream.  Here is a great and simple ice cream recipe using a bag.  This is a fun activity to keep kids entertained at any gathering.

Ingredients:

• 1 T. sugar

• 1/2 c. milk or half & half

• 1/4 t. vanilla

• 6 T. rock salt

• 1 pint-size plastic  bag (e.g., Ziploc)

• 1 gallon-size plastic  bag

• Ice cubes

Directions:

1. Fill the large bag half full of ice, and add the rock salt.

2. Put milk, vanilla, and sugar into the small bag, and seal it.

3. Place the small bag inside the large one, and seal.

4. Shake until the mixture is ice cream, which takes about 5 minutes.  The bag gets very cold so have the kids use towels, gloves or oven mitts.

5. Open carefully and enjoy

*side note:  1/2 cup milk will make about 1 scoop of ice cream
