Cooking with kids: Fruit Pizza
Thursday, May 13th, 2010Cooking with your kids is a great way to spend time with them and to get assistance in the kitchen! It’s also a fantastic method to getting children to eat vegetables and try new ingredients!
Most children enjoy playing “chef” and are willing to taste new foods when they’re preparing their own meals. It makes them feel responsible and mature. It’s a great technique I greatly recommend, next time your cooking dinner, have your kids help out, even if it’s to add the spices!
Here’s a great recipe for a fun snack or a delicious and healthy dessert: Fruit Pizza!

Ingredients (serves 8):
- 1 Ready to bake piecrust or bake your own crust to have ready.
- 1/2 cup soft spread fat-free or low-fat cream cheese
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- A selection of berries and sliced fruits (blueberries, strawberries, bananas, kiwis, seedless grapes sliced in half, Mandarin orange sections, pineapple, etc…)
- Shredded coconut (optional)
Directions:
Decide how you want to decorate your fruit pizza! Mke a shape in the middle like a face? a car? a boat? Get creative
- Let the piecrust come to room temperature per the package instructions, then unfold it onto a large cookie sheet or pizza pan.
- Roll up edges of the crust, crimping them slightly so that they’ll stay rolled up. Prick the crust lightly with a fork in about 20 places (allowing air to escape).
- Bake the crust in a preheated 450 degree oven for about 9 minutes or until it’s lightly browned. Remove from the oven and let cool.
- As the crust bakes, whisk together the cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla extract, adding just enough milk to make it spreadable.
- When the crust has cooled, spread on the cream-cheese mixture with a rubber spatula, bringing it to the edge of the pizza.
- Arrange the fruit on the pizza.
