Oscar Dinner Party
Thursday, March 4th, 2010Are you a movie-lover? Will you be watching the Oscars this Sunday night? I know, I will! I have a few of my friends coming over to visit around the same time as the award show, so I thought of a great dinner party idea: Oscar themed!

An Oscar party can be very simple or very extravagant. You decide!
Decorating Ideas:
- I suggest using the colors: white, black, silver and gold.
- Head over to your local fabric store and pick out a shiny, glittery fabric to drape over your table.
- Pick out some fake jewels to scatter across your table.
- Light some small candles and place around your table.
- Buy some white flowers and have them as your centerpiece.
- Download some Movie Ballots and other Oscar games so all your guests can make their winning predicts (be sure to buy a gift for the winner! )
- Create your own red-carpet! Do you have a red rug? Can you buy some thick red fabric? Get creative.
- Make Tuxedo Brownies (Bake a regular batch of brownies and once they’re cool, cut brownies in to small squares and use white vanilla icing to draw a tuxedo!)
- Be sure to have champagne or apple cider readily available – it adds a great element of glamour to the party.
- Go to your local party supply store and see if they sell fake movie ticket stubs or little gold award statues – they make great decorations around your home.
- Buy black, white and gold balloons and use as decorations.
- Make or buy finger foods! Remember you’ll most likely be focused on the award show, so buy foods that you love to snack on while watching TV!
Here are some great appetizer ideas:
Roasted Red Bell Peppers and Feta Cheese Spread
16 oz. (1 lb.) feta cheese, crumbled
3 small, ripe tomatoes, sliced thin
5 jarred roasted red peppers, drained and sliced
1/4 to 1/3 C. good-quality extra virgin olive oil
3 tbsp. fresh oregano, minced, divided
1 to 1 1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper, divided
Pinch salt
Instructions:
1. In the bottom of a glass pie pan spread the crumbled feta.
2. Layer roasted pepper on top. Sprinkle with half the oregano and pepper.
3. Layer the tomatoes on. Pour the olive oil over.
4. Sprinkle remaining oregano and pepper over and then tomatoes with small pinch of salt.
5. Stick your pan under a preheated broiler and broil until tomatoes are softened and cheese is bubbly, anywhere from 5-8 minutes.
California Bruschetta
1 crusty baguette
1/4 C. olive oil
3 cloves garlic, minced or pressed
2 perfectly ripe avocados
4 oz. Chevre cheese (soft goat cheese)
salt, to taste
1 1/2 C. perfectly ripe summer tomatoes, seeded and diced
2 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
1/4 C. packed fresh basil, packed
Instructions:
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and begin to sliece the bread in diagonal slices.
2. In a small bowl, stir together the olive oil and garlic.
3. Brush bread with oil mixture.
4. Bake bread on a single layer on flat baking sheets until crisp and golden, about 12 minutes. Then let bread cool.
5. To make the spread, combine the avocado and goat cheese in a small bowl. Mix well with a spoon until combined. Add a bit of salt to taste.
5. In a different small bowl, mix together the tomato, olive oil, black pepper, and salt. Stir in the basil.
6. Take each piece of bread and top each one with a nice smear of avocado spread. Using a slotted spoon to leave any liquid behind, top with some tomato mix. Serve quickly or they’ll get a bit soggy.
Bacon Wrapped Dates
24 large, pitted dates
12 slices of bacon, each cut in half widthwise
4 oz. your choice cheese, meat, or pineapple
24 nuts of you choice (optional)
Instructions:
1. Take toothpicks and let them lay in water until you’re going to use them (this allows toothpicks to not chip or burn). Preheat oven to 500 Degrees.
2. If working with a softer cheese, allow it to soften to make it easier to manipulate. If working with a harder cheese like Manchego or Parmesan, cut the cheese into hunks just big enough to fill up the empty space in your dates.
3. Place a sheet of parchment paper in the bottom of a baking sheet with edges.
4. If using nuts, stuff one almond or half a walnut or pecan into each date. Fill remaining space with cheese of your choice (you may have to slice the date open with a knife to stuff with cheese. Experiment with what works for your dates and your ingredients.)
5. Wrap a piece of bacon around each stuffed date. Secure bacon with a toothpick.
6. Place dates on your prepared baking sheet. Bake until bacon is brown and crispy, about 7 minutes.
7. Let cool slightly before serving these quick easy appetizers.
Three delicious and simple appetizers! Lastly remember to dress up and have your guest do the same! Have fun and enjoy the show!
